King KongWell, Lynda and I spent our Sunday afternoon on a
3 hour, 7 minute E-ticket ride at our local mega-cineplex. Yes, I said that
right, 187 minutes, and Kong didn't even put in an appearance until 81 minutes
into the movie by my watch! The original
King Kong
was only 100 minutes long (restored print runs
104 minutes), which shows how much was devoted to set up and character
development. Not that the beginning of the film was slow or anything; it was
good to get the back-story of the characters to better identify with them in
what lay ahead. I had never been all that enthralled with the rapid fire pacing
of the original anyway. Also, the recreation of 1933 New York was amazing, with
its buildings and cars, the people and even the soup lines. This all helped set
the tone for a film that was going to take you to another world
entirely.
